The suggestion that follows, directly reflects,
\nthe paltry affairs of state.
\nThe Illinois situation, pathetic and bleak,
\ndemands a unique, public debate.<\/p>\n
There’s a pair of potentates, two people of power,
\nwho together control our fates.
\nThey surely are spending their time doing something,
\nyet time for our state it grows late.<\/p>\n
Bills go unpaid, and services cut,
\nleave the poorest among us to suffer.
\nAnd funding for schools and towns is sporadic,
\nmakes the lives for all of us tougher.<\/p>\n
Here’s a helpful suggestion … wake the guy in the shadows …
\nand both give us talk that is straight.
\nTwo hours each evening, starting at 6,
\nwhy not have these two guys debate?<\/p>\n
We’re certainly owed an honest discussion,
\nlay the issues out open at last.
\nAnd while they’re at it, they each might explain,
\nwho’s included in their middle class.<\/p>\n
Each two hour segment, broadcast it live …
\nstream it across the state.
\nHave very bright lights, two chairs and a table …
\neach night for two hours ’til 8.<\/p>\n
What topics you ask? … Let’s start with migration,
\nIllinoisans are leaving the state.
\nHundred thousand net loss, last year alone,
\nat an annual increasing rate.<\/p>\n
Last year, millionaires … some three thousand strong …
\nleft Chicago behind.
\nAnd universities watch, their number of students,
\nin a sorry and steady decline.<\/p>\n
Debate pensions and Illinois financial ratings,
\nand interest on bills left unpaid.
\nAnd tell us what happened to billions of dollars …
\nfour years extra tax payments we made.<\/p>\n
Discuss why some jobs are in need of a license,
\nlike locksmiths and folks who braid hair;
\nor how to compute a franchise tax,
\nor if worker comp rules are fair.<\/p>\n
And let them review, who are the people,
\nwhom they each represent.
\nWho sends them money? to whom do they listen?
\nFrom whom do they wait for consent?<\/p>\n
Might positions be weaker for one of the two?
\nTherefore he hides from his foe?
\nDoes he fear he would break in open debate?
\nSo he comfortably hides in the shadows?<\/p>\n
The abuse of citizens being held hostage,
\n’tis mere fodder for a long, sorry tome?
\nIt’s their job to debate, and find some agreement.
\nIf they can’t … then resign and go home.<\/p>\n
